California Surfing and Climbing in the Fifties

Spellbinding photos of both surf and turf capture a major turning point in California's history.

This photo collection was captured during a time of Elvis, Kerouac, Brando, and a unique sense of California cool. Out West, surfing and climbing took off with new gear and a sun-soaked sense of adventure. Photographed mostly in the Yosemite Valley by the likes of Bob Swift, Alan Steck, Jerry Gallwas, and Frank Hoove, these pictures are proof positive of the movement, exhibiting the adrenaline-fueled ventures of 50’s counterculture.
