Leaves of Grass
Read some of America's best writing.
Considered the father of free verse, Walt Whitman wrote an insane number of poems before his death in 1892. Some his best are collected in Leaves of Grass, from Oh Captain! My Captain, to lesser known pieces like Song of Myself. Whitman covered everything from laborers, to mothers, to prostitutes, earning him bans and praise alike and inspiring writers for generations.
