Lou Reed was a true original, making his way into the public eye initially as the frontman and primary songwriter for avante garde darlings, The Velvet Underground. He went solo in 1970, releasing Transformer two years later. The record features prominently in Reed's career, thanks to mellow strokes of genius like "Walk On the Wild Side".

While art rockers The Velvet Underground saw middling success during the band's lifetime, frontman Lou Reed built a cult following both for the group and himself over the course of his 50+ year career. Born in Brooklyn and prone to addiction and depression as much as he was to pop and avant-garde transcendence, Reed is one of the few to be induced twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
