Appalachian Trail 1981 3D Raised Relief Map

A raised relief map for tactile exploration

Created from a flat piece of paper, the Appalachian Trail from 1981 is transformed by Muir Way into a 3D raised relief map in their San Diego workshop. To create these unique pieces, historical documents are scanned and combined with modern elevation data to align the raised terrain to a detailed mold. Once the mold is made, each piece gets printed, heated, and vacuum-formed for a colorful map that allows you to visually and tactilely explore the diverse terrain of the Appalachian Mountains from the Chattahoochee National Forest all the way up to Baxter State Park.
