The tracks were produced by a cadre of respected names including DJ Premier and Q-Tip, eventually rocketing to legendary acclaim in spite of an initial lack of commercial success. Illmatic debuted at #12 on the Billboard charts and is recognized at the genesis of east coast hip hop. Fun fact, the anthemic "N.Y. State of Mind" was recorded in one take.
