Van Morrison took a novel approach to record-making when he started work on Astral Weeks, his first solo album. The Irishman showed up to the studio with a handful of song ideas and simply allowed the band to work them out how they liked. The result is a blend of jammy performances, richer and more polished than you'd expect from a hodgepodge of arrangements built on-the-spot. The record holds a special place in the vocabulary folk music fans, not to mention the RIAA, which certified it gold in 2001.
