Mix it Up: The Caesar

A Canadian twist on the classic Bloody Mary.

Our friends up north don’t just have us beat with the whole universal healthcare/education thing — they also make a mean Bloody Mary, called a “Caesar.”

They were invented in Calgary, and are traditionally made with vodka (though we like bourbon or gin even better), hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and Clamato juice. That last ingredient, a mix of clam and tomato, is what separates one of these from a Bloody Mary, which uses solely tomato juice. Then they’re topped off with a pepperoni stick, a salt rim, and some vegetables — usually spicy peppers.

They’re popular with the brunch crowd and served as a purported hangover cure, and even though we know better, they still make for good sipping with a lazy Sunday morning breakfast.


  • 6 oz. Clamato Juice
  • 1 oz bourbon or gin
  • 2 dashes hot sauce
  • 4 dashes Worcestershire sauce
  • Black pepper
  • Celery salt
  • Pepperoni stick, spicy peppers, and pickles to garnish


  • Rim a highball glass with celery salt.
  • Add the liquid ingredients and stir.
  • Add black pepper to taste.
  • Add ice and garnishes.
  • Enjoy.
