Eight Easy Ways to Improve Your Bedroom Décor

You don't need a big renovation to upgrade your space – just a sharp eye and a few small tweaks.

Your bedroom is a sacred space. The spot where you spend at least a third of your day should make you feel rested, relaxed, inspired and, most importantly, like a king. If yours isn't quite up to par, don't sweat it – classing the place up is fairly easy.

All of these tips are simple and low-cost, so you can spruce things up without much difficulty, and the effort will pay off in spades. Pick a few, set aside an hour or two this weekend to set them up, and you'll be in business.

Add More Pillows

No, throw pillows are not just for ladies. It's a small but significant detail that makes your bed look a whole lot more put-together.

Look for small, square pillows that pick up other colors in your bedspread or on your walls. Lay them in front of your regular pillows once your bed is made, and your room will instantly look more polished. Two or three is all you need, depending on the size of your bed and the pillows themselves – you just want them to look like a subtle extra touch.

Oh, and if your standard sleep pillows are flat and worn out, replace them with some fluffier, more comfortable ones – it's well worth it to allocate a little more on these, given how much time you spend sleeping – and a new set of pillowcases.

Breathe New Life into Your Room

It's a tried-and-true tip for decorating almost any space in your home: add a plant or two. Having them in the bedroom says “I’m responsible enough to keep things alive.” Though if you’re not actually responsible enough to keep things alive, you can always opt for a low-maintenance succulent.

Whether you go for a hanging terrarium, a small potted fern, a vase with some cheap fresh flowers, or anything in between, plants will make your room feel less like a stuffy bachelor pad and more like a carefully considered adult home.

Burn Some Candles

These are a guaranteed way to set the mood. Get a few that you love, and light one up whenever you want to imbue an extra cozy vibe to your space. Natural, woodsy scents like pine, tobacco, coffee, or peppermint keep things masculine (though there's nothing wrong with lighter, more floral scents), and the aroma will lend an instant allure to your space.

Plus, everything (and we mean everything) looks good by candlelight. And you get bonus points if your candle comes in a presentation-worthy tin or jar, so that it can double as decoration.

Break out the Paint

You don’t need HGTV-level skills to pull this off. Adding a fresh coat of paint is surprisingly easy to do – all you really need is a few hours and some clothes you don't mind getting paint on. Trust us, the payoff is huge. Whether you’re going for a whole new color, a single accent wall, or you just want a fresh and bright coat of white, it's well worth your time. Put on some music, paint away, and then crack a beer and order some food once you're all done.

The one tricky thing is that you've really got to pay attention the prep work. Tape off your edges (unless you're extra skilled at painting by hand), working slowly and carefully – the time you spend prepping on the front end will make things run much more smoothly once you actually start throwing paint up on the wall.

If you're going from dark to white, you may need to start with a coat of primer. Other than that, all you've got to do is pour your paint, break out the rollers, and have at it. Slowly peel the painter's tape off once you're done, and boom: a whole new room.

Ditch the Blinds

Basic white, plastic blinds are in just about every starter apartment in America. Get rid of them and hang curtains instead. These are an easy way to make your bedroom feel a little more pulled together, bringing a level of permanence to your space by making it feel less transitional and more lived in. Plus, they’re super functional: not only do they add another layer of protection against Sunday morning sun, they add some insulation to help keep the heat in in the winter and the scorching sun out during peak summer hours.

Deck Out Your Floors

Accent or area rugs are about to become your new best bedroom friend. A good one will look sharp, first and foremost. But it'll also keeps your feet warm on chilly mornings, and prevents you from tracking dust and grit that can accumulate on hardwood around the rest of your space when you're barefoot.

The trick to pulling off the right one is to apply the rule of opposites: if you have a boldly patterned bedspread or lots of crazy accessories, go for a simple, neutral-colored rug. If your bedroom is pretty basic, go with a geometric pattern, eye-catching texture, or bolder color.

Invest in a Clothes Hamper

No matter how nice you bedroom décor, it all goes down the tubes as soon as you start throwing dirty socks on the floor. That's just a fact of life.

Taking the time to pick out a nice hamper not only helps keep things clean and clutter-free, but it can serve as a decorative item itself. Look for one made from quality materials like sturdy industrial canvas or neutral wood or wicker.

Get Artistic

Hanging some actual art on the walls is the ultimate mark of grown up digs. And since anyone with an iPhone is a photographer these days, finding things to hang is both easy and inexpensive.

An extra-nice, extra-big, high-res photo print will look sharp and artistic. Or if you want something wallet-friendly, prints like these blueprints of a NASA Space Shuttle are a strong choice for smaller walls. You can also check out local art shows and flea markets for inexpensive finds, or print off a few large photos from your favorite vacations/brewery tours/urban hikes to frame and hang.

Easy enough, right? Pick a couple that'll work with your space, put them into practice, and watch your room transform.
