Mix it Up: Oh, My Word

This custom creation from New York's top bitters bar, Amor y Amargo, is a softly sweet combination of gin, amaro, chartreuse, and orange.

This masculine take on the old-school Last Word cocktail comes from Sother Teague at Amor y Amargo, a bitters-centric bar in New York with mouthwatering cocktails and enough uniquely flavored bitters to make your head spin. For this recipe, they reached for some orange flavored ones and let the flavors shine by stirring, rather than shaking, and not including juice.

Rather than the sharp lime acidity from a Last Word, this take employs the soft but bitter notes of orange and orange blossom from a specific type of amaro, combined with the herbal complexity of chartreuse. The orange bitters round up all the flavors and tie them together, resulting in a delicious — and, fair warning, very boozy — final product.

  • 1 oz Old Tom gin
  • 1 oz amaro Montenegro
  • .5 oz chartreuse
  • .5 oz maraschino liqueur
