The Harrington traces its origins to the British-made Baracuta G9, introduced in 1937 as a lightweight golf and leisure jacket built for easy movement and unpredictable weather. Though the “Harrington” name wouldn't come until the ‘60s, the short, zip-front silhouette quickly became a mid-century casualwear essential.
Dean's red jacket in Rebel Without a Cause became one of the most recognizable garments in film history. Its bold color was chosen deliberately by the costume department to stand out in the movie's widescreen color cinematography, drawing the viewer's eye to Dean's character and heightening the emotional tension on screen.
